How to Measure for Compression Stockings
Measuring correctly is the most important step before buying compression stockings. A garment that is too tight can be uncomfortable or hard to put on; one that is too loose will not provide the graduated pressure your legs need. Follow the steps below and compare your numbers to the size chart on each product page.
What You Need
- A soft, flexible measuring tape
- Paper and pencil to record measurements
- A helper (optional, but helpful for thigh-high and pantyhose styles)
General Rules Before You Measure
- Measure in the morning, when swelling is lowest.
- Stand barefoot with your weight evenly distributed.
- Keep the tape flat and snug, but not tight enough to indent the skin.
- Write down each measurement in inches or centimeters and compare directly to the brand chart.
Step-by-Step Measuring Instructions
1. Ankle circumference
Measure the narrowest point above the ankle bone. This is usually just above the round bones on the inside and outside of your ankle.
2. Calf circumference
Measure around the widest part of your calf. Keep your leg relaxed and the tape horizontal.
3. Calf length (for knee-high stockings)
Sit down and measure from the floor to the back of your knee bend. This determines how tall the stocking should be.
4. Thigh circumference (for thigh-high styles)
Stand and measure the widest part of your thigh, usually near the top of the leg.
5. Leg length for thigh-highs
Measure from the floor to the top of your thigh where you want the stocking band to rest.
6. Hip and waist (for pantyhose or waist-high styles)
Measure the widest part of your hips and the natural waistline. These points decide whether an open or closed waist style fits best.
7. Compare to the size chart
